The purpose of the Manzana after school program is to create a natural environment using whole-language instruction through reading aloud and storytelling. When combined, these teaching elements help in the acquisition and development of reading, writing, vocabulary, phonetics, comprehension, and speaking in the target language, Spanish.
At Manzana, we focus our method of teaching on the second language acquisition theories of linguistics expert Stephen Krashen. The emphasis of the Manzana method is to help students gradually learn the Spanish language through listening comprehension rather than memorization of vocabulary and grammar.
We offer virtual or in-person classes through a unique learning environment for students, ages four and older, to cultivate their Spanish speaking skills by providing either private 1-on-1 lessons and a low 6:1 student-to-instructor ratio.
As an instructor, I aim to make parents aware of the significant benefits reading aloud and storytelling can have by helping their children improve in the areas of oral communication, reading comprehension, and writing skills, in turn, helping their children succeed in the future. After all, research has shown that listening comprehension develops before reading comprehension. As Jim Trelease puts it: “if a child is mature enough to speak, he or she is mature enough to read—it’s the same language``
